Igeh most decorated Wayland athlete

Comfort Igeh is the most decorated athlete in the history of Wayland Baptist University.  During her four years of competition, Igeh earned 23 NAIA All-American designations and won 11 National Championship titles.  At the time of her induction, she was one of only three women athletes in NAIA history to win three individual national outdoor titles in one year (1986), and among a handful of NAIA female athletes to win more than four individual titles in their careers (she won five).

Igeh came to Wayland in 1985 from Nigeria where she had been working for the Bendei State Sport Council.  In her first NAIA competition, she finished second in the long jump at the National Indoor Championships.  A few months later, she won two more All-American honors with a fourth place finish in the long jump and a second place finish as a member of the Pioneer sprint relay team.

Her sophomore season was her best at Wayland, however.  At the NAIA National Indoor Championships, Igeh won two national championship titles in the long jump and as a member of the sprint relay team.  At the outdoor championships, she took home the gold medal in the long jump, the 100-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash, and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay and the sprint medley relay teams.  She was voted the Herbert B. Marett Outstanding Performer Award at the NAIA Championships, and was named to the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame as the 1986 Panhandle Track Athlete of the Year.  Her time of 23.69 in the 200-meters set a new national meet record as did her distance in the long jump (21’1.75).  The mark in the long jump continues to be a Wayland record.

The two-time Wayland Baptist Track & Field Athlete of the Year took home her second consecutive long jump title at the 1987 NAIA Outdoor Championships with a jump of 20’7.75.  In her final season, she was crowned the national indoor champion in the 60-yard dash with a time of 6.93 and won her third NAIA outdoor long jump championship.  She was also a member of the winning mile relay team.

Igeh graduated from Wayland in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.  In May of 1997, she was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
