Tommy McMillan joined the Pioneer baseball team as full-time assistant coach in the summer of 2011 after previously serving as a volunteer assistant for six years. McMillan has worked in baseball in some fashion for most of his life and has proven to be a valuable member to Wayland’s coaching staff.
McMillan grew up playing baseball and eventually went on to play third base at Texas Tech University from 1973-76. After graduating from Tech, McMillan spent three years working at a sporting goods store in Amarillo where he stayed in contact with the game he loved. It was at that time, however, that his father asked him to come to work for the family accounting firm. McMillan, who graduated with a degree in business, returned to college to pick up the accounting hours he needed. He joined his dad as an accountant for a career that was only interrupted once by a short stint in the banking industry.
McMillan has served the baseball community of Plainview with his involvement in the Optimist Club. He has coached several local teams and been instrumental in bringing multiple Babe Ruth Southwest Regional Tournaments to Plainview, which were hosted at Wayland’s Wilder Field.
McMillan is a native of Plainview and is married to Susan. They have two children, Lori Johnston and Chance McMillan; and five grandchildren, Rileigh, Madeline, Grayson, Cameron and Lane.
