Coach Miller enters his second season at Wayland Baptist University as well as his 18th season coaching track & field and cross-country and he could not be more excited for what is in store this year.
In his first year at the helm of the Track & Field and Cross-Country programs at Wayland Baptist University, Coach Miller has made an extraordinary impact, successfully recruiting over 50 new members and cultivating a vibrant, competitive team culture. Under his leadership, the program has celebrated impressive achievements, including 31 National Qualifiers, 11 All-Americans, and 5 National Champions. The men’s team demonstrated remarkable strength, achieving national finishes of 6th in the NCCAA and 31st in the NAIA, reflecting Coach Miller’s commitment to excellence and development.
Coach Miller brings a robust array of credentials and certifications to his coaching role. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has earned multiple USTFCCCA Specialist Certifications in Sprints, Hurdles, and Relays; Jumping Events; Distance Events; and Combined Events. Additionally, he holds the USATF Level 1 Certification and was invited to participate in the prestigious USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp. His extensive knowledge and hands-on experience equip him to develop athletes across a wide range of disciplines, ensuring their success both on the track and in their athletic careers.
Before joining Wayland Baptist, Coach Miller enjoyed a prolific four-year tenure at South Plains College (SPC), where he played a pivotal role in the program’s national prominence. His coaching prowess contributed to a staggering 253 All-Americans and 88 National Champions. He has guided his athletes to set 5 NJCAA Records and more than 200 NJCAA Top 20 All-Time Marks. His dedication to his athletes earned him the title of National Assistant Coach of the Year six times, alongside eight Regional Assistant Coach of the Year awards. Under his leadership, the SPC teams captured seven National Championships and secured multiple Runner-up and Third-place Finishes at National Competitions, consistently ranking among the best in the nation.
Coach Miller’s success is further highlighted by his ability to develop elite competitors. He has coached athletes to world-class achievements, including a World Record Holder, a Collegiate Record Holder, and several Olympic Qualifiers who competed in events such as the Men's 400 hurdles and the Women’s 100m. He has coached athletes to U.S. World & Olympic Trials, USA Indoor & Outdoor Championships, USA Junior National Championships, as well as Olympic & World trials competitions in multiple other countries. His athletes have also earned medals at the Pan American Games, including silver medals in the Women's Heptathlon and Men's 400 hurdles.
With eight years of NCAA Division 1 coaching experience at Louisiana Tech University and Northwestern State University, Coach Miller has a proven track record of success serving as Associate Head Coach at both universities. His teams achieved 58 All-Conference Performances and 32 National Championship Qualifiers, including 4 All-Americans. Miller set new standards at Louisiana Tech, coaching athletes to 7 school records and multiple national appearances. His influence helped NSU achieve its highest combined team finishes in school
history during the 2016 Southland Conference Championships, where the women's team finished 2nd and the men's team finished 3rd. His coaching also resulted in USTFCCCA #1 & #3 National Final Squad Rankings in the Men’s Triple & Long Jumps respectively among all Division 1 schools.
Coach Miller’s commitment to relentless recruitment has allowed him to attract talent from around the globe, having signed and coached athletes from countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, Grenada, Bahamas, Barbados, Colombia, Venezuela, Ireland, Canada, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Morocco, Brazil, Mexico, Cameroon, Guyana, Spain, France, and the United States. His ability to identify untapped talent and develop athletes throughout their collegiate careers has resulted in numerous national champions and world-class competitors, showcasing his impact on the sport.
Prior to his collegiate coaching experience, Coach Miller served as the Head Track & Field and Cross-Country Coach at San Antonio Christian Schools for three years. During his tenure there, he guided his teams to 4 Team Championships and 2 Runner-up Finishes, establishing a legacy of success. He also played a pivotal role in founding Celerity Performance, a club track & field and cross-country team in San Antonio in 2011, further showcasing his commitment to developing athletes from the grassroots level.
Academically, Coach Miller is well-qualified, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a Master’s degree in Health & Human Performance with a specialization in Sports Administration. His academic background complements his coaching philosophy, as he teaches various college courses in Kinesiology, Exercise & Sports Science, and Health & Human Performance, sharing his knowledge and passion for sports with the next generation of athletes. Coach Miller has also spoken at numerous track & field and sports conventions and clinics across Texas and Louisiana over the years.
Away from the track, Coach Miller enjoys a fulfilling family life with his wife, Kyle, and their two children, Adelyn and Colton. His commitment to family mirrors his dedication to nurturing athletes, creating a supportive environment where both can thrive. With a passion for athletics and a proven track record of success, Coach Miller continues to shape the future of track and field at Wayland Baptist University, inspiring athletes to reach their full potential and achieve greatness on and off the field.
