PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist University Athletics has announced the hiring of Mariah Flores as the new Head Cheer Coach. Flores brings collegiate leadership experience, coaching success, and a passion for developing student-athletes in a Christ-centered environment to the Pioneer cheer program.

"We are very happy to have Mariah part of our athletic department. She is bringing great experience, spirit and passion. I look forward to her positive spirit helping support our teams and the university," said Wayland Baptist University Director of Athletics Jim Giacomazzi.

Flores comes to Wayland after serving two years as an assistant high school cheer coach, where she helped develop athletes' technical skills, foster teamwork and discipline, assist with practice planning, and support both gameday and competition performances. Her coaching experience has prepared her to confidently lead and grow a successful collegiate cheer program.

Flores also spent two years on the coaching staff for Christian Cheerleaders of America, promoting sportsmanship, discipline, and Christian values in a positive team environment. Flores collaborated with fellow coaches to plan training sessions, oversee team activities, and support athletes in achieving both individual and team performance goals.

Cheerleading has been a defining part of Flores' life for more than 10 years. She cheered all four years at Lubbock Christian University and served as team captain during her final two seasons. Flores credits those experiences with shaping her leadership, discipline, and passion for coaching.

"I am incredibly excited and deeply thankful to be named the new Head Cheer Coach at Wayland Baptist University," Flores said. "I look forward to creating a positive culture where athletes feel supported, challenged, and motivated to succeed. I value strong communication with athletes, parents, and school administration, and I am committed to representing the program with professionalism and integrity."

"My goal is to build a program that emphasizes excellence in performance, academic success, character, and school spirit," Flores said. "Christ is at the center of our team. As head coach, Flores will oversee all aspects of the Wayland Baptist cheer program, including recruiting, athlete development, gameday performances, and fostering a culture that reflects the mission and values of Wayland Baptist University. She begins her duties immediately as the Pioneers prepare for the upcoming season.
