Brian Whitlock

Brian Whitlock came to Wayland in 2004 from Oklahoma Baptist University to take over as head of the Pioneers cross country team and to serve as the track and field assistant coach.  A 2001 graduate of OBU where he was a Sooner Athletic Conference cross country champion and an NAIA all-American, Whitlock has helped turn the Pioneer cross country program from an after-thought to a national contender.

Wayland’s men’s team qualified for the NAIA Cross Country Championships in 2005 and 2006, as well as from 2010-12. They were ranked ninth in the final NAIA Top 25 in 2005, 14th in 2006, second in 2010 and fifth in 2011. Six of his runners earned NAIA All-American recognition, five of which captured individual conference championships, while Kennedy Kithuka won the NAIA National Championship in 2010 and 2011.

The Wayland women, who were ranked nationally in 2006 for the first time in over a decade, have finished in the top 25 five times including sixth in both 2007 and 2008. The women’s team has qualified for the national championships from 2006-2008 and then again from 2010-11. The 2007 team won both the SAC and regional cross country titles. Whitlock has coached two NAIA All-Americans as well as three NAIA Scholar Athletes.

In his first year at WBU, Whitlock was named the Sooner Athletic Conference and Region VI Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to a second place finish.  He was also named the 2006 Women’s Conference Coach of the Year.

Whitlock also served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Wayland from 2007 to 2011. During his tenure as head coach, Whitlock was named NAIA Coach of the Year three times and coached the men’s team that won the 2010 outdoor national championship and the women’s squad that won the indoor and outdoor national championships in both 2008 and 2009.

Whitlock reassumed head coach duties of track and field in the summer of 2015.
