Wayland Baptist University Athletics

Athletic Training

FUNCTION AND MISSION:
The function of the sports medicine and athletic training staff at Wayland Baptist University is to serve Wayland intercollegiate student-athletes. The mission of the staff is to enable the student-athletes at Wayland to reach their athletic potential by preventing, managing, treating and rehabilitating athletic injuries. The athletic training staff truly cares about the athlete as an individual and not just as a participant. The staff is dedicated to helping the student-athlete return to his or her sport as soon as it is safely possible, with minimal risk for follow-up injuries.

The Athletic Training program gives student athletic trainers the opportunity to work in a practical setting with all teams and athletes, while completing the course work and hours needed to sit for the Texas state licensing exam for athletic trainers.

INSURANCE INFORMATION:
The athletic injury insurance carried at the university is, in the vast majority of cases, a secondary or excess insurance policy. Athletes are asked to have a primary insurance policy before participating in intercollegiate athletic activity. Upon injury, the athlete's primary insurance is initially billed. After the primary insurance has covered its portion the claim is forwarded to Wayland's insurance carrier for processing. Unless the injury occurs as part of an emergency situation, all injuries should be reported to the athletic training staff prior to seeking other treatment. Student athletes seeking care without the approval of the university's professional sports medicine staff may be held accountable for any expense incurred. For additional information contact a member of the athletic training staff.

ATHLETIC PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:
All student athletes must receive and pass a physical examination prior to participation in team or individual practices or competitions. Physicals are scheduled through the university's sports medicine staff. Under no circumstances will an athlete be allowed to play, practice or participate in conditioning activities without the completed Medical History Questionnaire and Physical Examination form being in the hands of the university's athletic training staff.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY
Wayland Baptist University is a Christian institution, which is concerned with the total well-being of its students.  The formulation of behavioral expectations into policy is guided by Southern Baptist relationships within the Wayland community.  All student athletes of the university are expected to maintain high standards of moral conduct and concern for the well-being and rights of their fellow students.  These standards of conduct include the prohibitive use, possession or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs or tobacco products by students on university owned or controlled property or in conjunction with any university activity.  Students are expected at all times to adhere to standards of public and private behavior consistent with the philosophy and purposes of the university and with local, state and federal laws.
