Basketball Season Opens With Pioneer Win

Basketball season opened up at Hutcherson Center in rousing fashion with the Pioneers scoring the first 11 points of the game and then going on to defeat Dallas Christian College 94-36 before 405 fans on Halloween Eve.

Senior guard Rishi Kakad led all scorers with 22 points for Wayland. Sophomore returnee Johnny Terra came off the bench to score 12 and pull down eight rebounds, while junior guard Andrew Davenport and Taylor Janowicz added ten points each.

Janowicz, the Pioneer's 7-0 center, recorded a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Rodrigo Silva also had eight boards. Davenport handed out eight assists and had two steals, while Tommie Sanders dished out seven assists.

WBU shot a blistering 62 percent from the field in the first half, including 9-of-15 from behind the three-point arch, but cooled off considerably in the second period, finishing the game shooting 48.6 percent from the field.

The tight Pioneer defense held the visitors to just 17.5 percent shooting. Wayland outscored the much-smaller Crusaders 36-6 inside the paint and won the battle of the boards 61-29.

Christian Lawyer was the only Dallas Christian player to hit the double figure mark in points with 19.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, 98-64 losers to Lubbock Christian on Friday.
