Freshman Trevor Burkhead scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the Pioneers' 6-1 loss to John Brown University during a cold and blustery early evening game at Hilliard Field on Thursday.
Burkhead, a defender from Lubbock's Coronado High School, wove his way through a swarm of Golden Eagle defenders to get the unassisted goal at the 78:11 mark of the contest. It was his only shot of the game.
Colten Givens had four shots to lead the Pioneers, three of which forced a save by the visiting goalkeeper. Daniel Williams, Luis De La Cruz and T.J. Nolen also recorded shots on goal. John Piperis had what was perhaps WBU's best chance of the game when he took a perfect pass off a corner kick from Bryan Merlos, but the wide-open header sailed high over the crossbar.
John Brown scored four goals in a 15 minute period of the first half, and then added a fifth with just 10 seconds left before intermission. Juan Iraole had two of the goals, while Justin Thompson recorded a goal and an assist in the game.
The Pioneer men return to the road next week with a match at Southern Nazarene University on Tuesday afternoon. They play again at home on Thursday, Oct. 14 against Mid-America Christian. That game, which was originally scheduled for Friday, is set to begin at 1 p.m.
