Pioneers Come Up Short Against Chaps

Box Score

Lubbock, Tex---The second meeting of the season between the Pioneers and Lubbock Christian lacked the last minute drama of the first, but it was still a close contest that came down to the final minute of play with the Chaparrals taking the 66-59 victory.

Sophomore guard Johnny Terra helped Wayland jump out to an early 7-2 lead with a long three-pointer and a bucket off an LCU turnover sandwiched between a Rishi Kakad basket.

The Chaps came back to take a three-point lead into the lockerroom at the half, 34-31, but the Pioneers scored the first four points of the second period on back-to-back shots by Terra and Rodrigo Silva to briefly regain the advantage.

The home team eventually pulled ahead to stay, but never led by more than nine points.   The hero of game one, Douglas Williams, hit a basket at the 8:45 mark to make it 53-44, but the Pioneers went on a 10-3 run punctuated by Silva's bucket in the paint off a pass from Terra to pull to within two exactly four minutes later.

Two straight baskets put the Chaps back up by six and the contest stayed a two possession affair until Kakad converted a traditional three-point play with 34 seconds left that made it 62-59.

LCU's Clay Roberts hit all four of his free throw attempts down the stretch to give his team the seven point win.

Kakad led Wayland with 17 points.  Rodrigo Silva was the only other Pioneer to hit the double figure mark in scoring with 13 points.  The sophomore center also had a game-high eight boards.  Terra, who was a perfect 3-for-3 with seven points in the first half, was limited to just two points in the second because of foul trouble.

Tommie Sanders had a game-high four steals, and Jason Griffin contributed eight points, six boards, and a team-high three assists.

The Pioneers, who continue to play without two starters--- guard Andrew Davenport and center Taylor Janowicz, both of whom are injured--- had three more field goals in the game than their opponent, and won the battle of the boards, 31-25, but the Chaparrals converted 19 of 24 free throw attempts, while WBU got just seven points off 12 attempts from the charity stripe.

Four Chaps scored in double figures, led by Al Duvall with 17 points.

WBU, which falls to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, looks to capture its first SAC win of the season on the road this weekend against Oklahoma Christian at 8 p.m. on Thursday and Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
