Box Score The Pioneers and the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals went into Monday night's basketball game with identical 6-9 Sooner Athletic Conference records and both teams were coming off back-to-back wins. Something had to give, and unfortunately for the home fans at Hutcherson Center it was the hot hand of the Chaparrals that came out with a 79-62 win.
LCU shot a blistering 64 percent from the field in the first half to jump out to a 47-28 lead. Wayland led briefly, 14-12, on a put-back by Teddy Chambers, but the visitors went on a 30-8 run in the middle part of the opening period to take control.
Chambers led all players with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tyrone Crawford added 14 points and had four assists and two steals.
The Pioneers (14-10, 6-10) were without the services of starting forward Johnny Terra who injured an ankle in Saturday's win over Oklahoma City.
Kenny Hewitt, the SAC's second leading scorer averaging just over 19 points a game, was held to 14 points by the WBU defense.
The battle of the boards was won by the Pioneers, 31-22, and Wayland outscored the Chaps in the paint, 34-30, but the visitors from Lubbock put down nine three-pointers and turned the ball over just 13 times.
The Pioneers closed their seven-game homestand and return to the road this week with games in Oklahoma against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday and Oklahoma Christian on Saturday.
