Box Score Chickasha, Okla.--- The Wayland Baptist Pioneers fell to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 72-64, on Thursday, despite a career-high 27 points from sophomore Johnny Terra. Joining Terra in double figures was Rishi Kakad with 20 and Bobby Watkins with 12.
USAO jumped out early, scoring the first seven points of the game before Terra's jumper finally put the Pioneers on the board. Wayland made it a one-point game, 15-14, when Terra hit one of his four three-pointers at the 13:16 mark. Six minutes later, Watkins tied it at 22 with a jumper, but the home team responded with a 15-5 run to make it a double-digit advantage at the break.
A basket by Watkins with 8:34 remaining in the game put the Pioneers back to within seven, 55-48, after they had fallen behind by as much as 15 earlier in the period. WBU made it a two possession game (69-64) with 21 seconds left on another bucket by Terra, but the Drovers hit three-of-four free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory.
The Pioneers shot 41.7 percent from the field and were good on 12 of 20 free throw attempts. USAO hit 45.5 percent of their field goals and put in 13 of its 20 attempts from the charity stripe. The teams were even on the boards with 35 a piece. WBU turned the ball over 14 times to 12 by the Drovers.
Terra got his first double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with his 27 points. Tommie Sanders increased his assist total with eight more, and also contributed a block and a steal.
Anthony Turner had 19 points and Thomas Peters added 18 to pace the Drovers.
The task doesn't get any easier for the Pioneers (5-9, 1-8) who now must travel to Bethany, Okla. on Saturday for a contest against the ninth-ranked Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene University. SNU defeated Lubbock Christian 88-60 on Thursday to improve its record to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the SAC.
