Box Score PLAINVIEW, TEX --- Bobby Watkins had a season-high 22 points and the Pioneers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 58-51 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University. It was Watkins' second consecutive double-double as the sophomore from Amarillo also pulled down 11 rebounds in the contest.
Neither team shot particularly well in the opening 20 minutes. The Rangers hit only four of their 18 shots from the field (22.2%), while the Wayland men made good on 34.8% (8-of-23) of their field goal attempts. WBU did take an 11-point lead into the locker room at the half and extended the advantage to 14 on Watkins's three-point play to start the second period.
Northwestern eventually closed the lead to five with 14 seconds remaining, but Johnny Terra and Josh Teague hit four straight free throws to seal the victory.
The Pioneers won the rebounding battle, 33-28, but were outscored 24-16 in the paint. Wayland scored just six times from the field in the final period, but put in 19 of 26 free throw attempts, while the Rangers had just nine opportunities at the line in the second half.
Tommie Sanders and Terra each dished out three assists, and Watkins came up with a team-high four steals.
The win was the second of the season for the Wayland men who improved to 6-10 overall and 2-9 in SAC play. They will attempt to make it two in a row on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm when they will take on an angry Oklahoma Christian team. The 12th-ranked Eagles were upset by Lubbock Christian on Thursday by a score of 67-55.
