Pioneers Lose Shooting Touch Against Hillcats

Box Score

The Wayland Baptist Pioneers had a miserable day shooting the basketball in a 61-49 loss to Rogers State University on Saturday afternoon at Hutcherson Center. The loss snapped a three-game win streak by the Pioneers (8-11, 4-10).

In Friday afternoon's win against John Brown, the WBU men shot 52 percent from the field, hitting seven three-pointers. Against the tough pressure defense of the Hillcats, Wayland made a season-low two three-pointers, both in the first half, and finished the game with a shooting percentage of 37.5 percent.

Rishi Kakad, who had a team-high 15 points, scored seven of the Pioneer's first eight points to give Wayland an early 8-2 advantage.

The visitors came charging back, outscoring WBU 24-11 over the final 15 minutes of the opening period to take a 26-19 lead into the lockerroom at the break.

RSU (14-7, 7-6) expanded the lead to 12 three minutes into the second period, but the Pioneers didn't fold, closing the deficit to two, 37-35, on a bucket by Rodrigo Silva with 12:21 on the clock.

Wayland kept it a two possession game over the course of the next five minutes, but the Hillcats took control late with a 9-0 run.

Jason Griffin was the only other Pioneer to reach double figures with 10 points. Taylor Janowicz had eight rebounds, and Tommie Sanders dished out a team-high four assists.

The Pioneers edged out their opponents on the boards, 32-31, but Rogers State scored 34 points in the paint and converted 17 WBU turnovers into eight points. On the other end of the court, Wayland got just two points off 16 Hillcat turnovers, and only 22 points came inside.

Saturday's contest concluded a four-game home stand for the Pioneers, who won three of the four on their home court. They travel to Shawnee, Okla. on Thursday for a rematch against third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University.
