OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist women's wrestling team took on two powerhouses in its first-ever competition, and not surprisingly the Pioneers struggled against defending National Champion Oklahoma City and national qualifer University of the Cumberlands on Saturday afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena.
In the first match of the day, the OCU Black team blanked the women from WBU, 49-0. Later, WBU took on Cumberlands and the school from Kentucky walked away with a 44-1 decision. Freshman Andrianna Rivas of Richmond, Tex. recorded the lone point for the Pioneers in the 63 kg class when she lost on a decision 2-0 and 2-1.
Wayland took on the Oklahoma City Blue team in its final match and faired better, dropping the match by a score of 37-6. Ofelia Valdez, a sophomore from Dallas, won by forfeit in the 48 kg class, while freshman Gloria Guerra of El Paso took a point in the 90 kg match, taking OCU's Karra Stratton to three rounds before dropping the decision, 2-0, 2-3, 1-0.
Archie Randall, the coach that has led both OCU's men's and women's teams to national prominence was complimentary to the young Wayland team at the conclusion of the day.
"For a first year program, Coach Johnny Cobb put together a pretty good team, and they'll develop into a really good program with all their freshmen. Wayland Baptist is a part of the Sooner Athletic Conference and hopefully there will be others in our conference that will start men's and women's wrestling."
The Pioneers return to Oklahoma City next weekend where they will participate in duals against Jamestown (ND), Missouri Valley College and OCU.
