Pioneer Men Hold There Own Against #13 Drovers

PLAINVIEW, Tex. --- The Wayland men's soccer team put up a valiant effort against the 13th-ranked USAO Drovers in a 4-1 loss at Hilliard Field on a windy Friday afternoon.

After giving up an early goal, the Pioneers, who were wearing light blue jerseys with pink numbers in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the first period, limiting the Drovers to seven shots, only one of which reached WBU goalkeeper David Metcalfe.

Wayland freshman Guillermo Villarreal tied the score 20 minutes into the second half getting a shot into the net despite heavy traffic.

Just 35 seconds later, USAO's Scott Parkinson regained the lead for his team with a deflection off a corner kick.

The Drovers, who are 13-3 overall and 7-3 in SAC play, scored again just six minutes later, and got their fourth goal of the game with just two minutes on the clock. They recorded ten shots in the final 45 minutes.

Villarreal's goal was his third of the season. It was the only shot on goal for the Pioneers, who had three shots total.

The Wayland men conclude the 2010 season at home on Tuesday against Lubbock Christian University. That game is set to follow the women's contest, which is scheduled for a 5 pm start.
