PLAINVIEW, Tex. --- The 2010 soccer season came to an end for the Wayland Baptist Pioneers on Tuesday at Hilliard Field with a 2-0 loss to Lubbock Christian University.
Two seniors, Daniel Williams, an Exercise and Sports Sciences major from Tucson, Ariz. and John Redig, an English Education major from League City, Tex. were honored before the game. Both have been with the Pioneer program since its inaugural season a year ago.
The Wayland men just could not produce any offense against the Chaparrals. Only nine shots were recorded in the game, two each by Carlos Mellado, John Piperis and Aidan Mooney.
The first point of the contest didn't come until eight seconds before intermission when LCU's Dustin Jones put in a long kick from just inside the top of the circle. The second goal came off a corner kick when Quinton Jackson put back a rebound off the hands of WBU goalie David Metcalfe five minutes into the second half.
Metcalfe was kept busy throughout the evening. LCU generated 26 shots. The junior from Manchester, England made six saves in the first period and three more in the second.
The two teams combined for 27 fouls, although only two yellow cards were issued. LCU had six corner kicks to two by the Pioneers.
The Chaparrals (10-5-2, 4-5-1) must wait for the outcome of other games scheduled on Tuesday before finding out their postseason fate. The Wayland men complete their season with a record of 3-13 and 0-10.
