Pioneer Women Showing Improvement

AMARILLO, Texas --- The Wayland Baptist women's wrestlers showed remarkable improvement in their three duals at The Courts of Amarillo on Saturday. Although the Pioneer women lost all three duals, they managed to put up a total of 30 points on the day.

Sophomore Nallely Carrillo scored the only point in a 34-1 loss to defending national champion Oklahoma City University. The 112-pounder from El Paso took OCU's Logan Rich to three periods before losing an extremely close, 6-0, 0-5, 2-2 decision.

In the 29-12 loss to Simon Fraser University of Canada, Loraine Herrera, a freshman from El Paso pinned her opponent at the 33 second mark of the second period in the 147-pound class. Freshman Andrianna Rivas of Richmond, Texasalso picked up five points on a win by forfeit at 138 pounds. The Pioneers got single points from freshman Samantha Gonzales of Lakin, Kansas in her 6-5, 4-1 loss at 112 pounds, and by Bethany Courkamp. A junior from Amarillo, Courkamp took Simon Fraser's Gina Carpenter to three periods at 121 pounds before losing the decision, 1-0, 2-2, 6-0.

The Pioneers won the first three bouts of their 21-17 loss against Lindenwood University. After a forfeit win by El Paso freshman Akira Pena at 97 pounds, sophomore Ofelia Valdez of Dallas pinned Lindenwood's Brianna Gedeon in the second period of the 105 pound bout. Carrillo responded with a pin of her own at the 1:17 mark of the second period to put WBU up 15-0.

Anna Almanza, a freshman from Amarillo's Caprock High School, picked up another point in a 2-1, 3-0 loss at 121 pounds. The final WBU point was awarded to sophomore Kirsten Iruegas of Hereford, who earned it in a 1-0, 5-1 loss at 158 pounds.

The Pioneer women don't compete again until January 19 when they take on Missouri Baptist in Oklahoma City.
