SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The Wayland Baptist Pioneers saw their post-season hopes go down the drain here Saturday afternoon, falling to John Brown University, 69-56.
The loss mathematically eliminated the Pioneers (10-15, 6-14) from the race to make the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, which accepts the top eight teams in the league.
Wayland twice led by as many as seven points, the last time at 25-18, before the Eagles (20-8, 12-8) scored 10 straight points to take a 28-25 lead.
After trailing 40-32 at halftime, the Pioneers staged a second-half rally by posting their own 10-0 run, leading to 47-45 Wayland lead. But John Brown answered immediately with nine straight points to take the lead for good, eventually going up by as many as 16 points.
Bobby Watkins led Wayland, which hit 14-of-15 free throws, with 15 points while Rishi Kakad added 10. Johnny Terra had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with his eight points.
John Brown was led by three players - Coleson Rakestraw, Abel Galliguez and Andrius Mikutis with 12 points each.
The Pioneers end their season with home games this week against Oklahoma City at 8 p.m. Thursday and, for homecoming, against Mid-America Christian at 4 p.m. Saturday.
