Last Second Shot Ruins Homecoming for Pioneers

The Wayland Baptist Pioneers concluded the 2009-10 basketball season with a heart-breaking 61-60 loss to Mid-America Christian University on Saturday afternoon at Hutcherson Center.

MACU's Cameron Langster grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in with .6 seconds on the clock after Wayland sophomore Bobby Watkins hit a basket in the paint with 10 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers the lead.

Taylor Janowicz had a career-high 26 points in the contest, knocking down 12 of the 13 shots he attempted. Watkins was the only other player to hit the double figure mark with 14. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Pioneers had a 21-16 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first period, but the Evangels went on a 21-10 run to go into the lockerrom up by six, 37-31.

Although MACU led for much of the second half, the lead never got into double digits. Trailing 59-50 with two and a half minutes remaining, WBU's Josh Teague hit a three-pointer to start a 10-0 run that ended with Watkins' shot that gave the Pioneers the 60-59 advantage.

Wayland shot 42 percent from the floor for the game, hitting just 2-of-10 from beyond the arch. The Evangels knocked down 51 percent of their shots and hit six three-pointers.

WBU outscored its opponent 32-24 in the paint and put in 12 second chance points to just four by MACU.. The Pioneers also did a much better job of protecting the ball, turning it over just 15 times compared to 26 by the Evangels.

The Wayland men finish up the season with a record of 11-16 overall and 7-15 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
