Pioneer Women Fall Short in Opener

The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team opened its season with a 4-2 loss at home against Texas Wesleyan University on Monday.

Sophomore Corita Kraemer got the first goal of her career just over 30 minutes into the first period to tie the score at one, and then senior Najuka Anderson put the Pioneers on top just three minutes later, but the Lady Rams came back with three unanswered goals in the second period to pick up their second win of the young season.

"I thought our girls played their hearts out," said WBU Coach Shiloh Posey following the contest. "We had them scared, but running into that wind in the second half just wore us down."

The Pioneers, who had the wind at their backs in the first 45 minutes, outshot TWU 10-7, but the visitors took advantage of a limited bench on the home side and a stiff breeze at their backs to put up 18 shots in the second half.

Senior Haley Hill and junior Ashley Woodall got the assists on Kraemer's goal, while another freshman Kathleen Stewart assisted on Anderson's shot that went to the back of the net.

Hill led the Pioneers in shots with four, two of which were on goal. Anderson had three shots. Junior Samantha Garcia played the first half in the net and recorded four saves. Stewart took the loss, playing in goal the second period. She made three saves.

Jessica Watton of TWU scored her third goal of the season 14 minutes into the contest, and then scored the tying goal at the 52 minute mark. Watton also picked up two assists in the contest.

WBU returns to action on Friday with an afternoon match against McMurry University in Abilene.
