BROWNWOOD, Tex. --- Howard Payne exploded for four goals in the opening minutes of the second half and Mother Nature took care of the final minutes as the Pioneer men lost their first game of the season 6-1 here late Saturday afternoon.
Leading 2-0 at the intermission, HPU scored four goals in a three-and-a-half minute period, two by Shane Cazad, to take control of the contest.
Sophomore John Piperis got the Pioneers on the board with his first goal of the season on an assist by Carlos Mellado almost 74 minutes in. WBU didn't have a chance to do anymore damage, however, when officials called the game at the 79:18 mark due to lightning.
Wayland had 16 shots in the game. Sophomores Trevor Burkhead and Gerardo Espinoza had a team-high three each. Junior goalkeeper David Metcalfe had all five of the Pioneer saves in goal, all in the first half.
WBU, 2-1 on the season, returns home for a match-up against Eastern New Mexico at 7 pm on Monday at Hilliard Field.
