Soccer Teams Shutout in Oklahoma

BETHANY, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist soccer teams suffered a pair of shutouts at the hands of Southwestern Christian University on Saturday afternoon with the women falling 1-0 and the men 3-0.

In the women's contest, freshman Kathleen Stewart took four of the Pioneers' six shots. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Garcia made six saves in the game, but gave up the game-winner at the 75:22 mark of the second period.

WBU got six corner kicks, five in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to convert on any of them.

Like the women, the Pioneer men were stagnant offensively, producing just five shots, two by freshman forward David Ajibero.

Southwestern Christian got two of their three goals in the first period off WBU goalkeeper David Metcalfe, who came back to make four saves in the second half.

Both Wayland teams open Sooner Athletic Conference action at home on Tuesday against Oklahoma Baptist University. The women are slated to kick off at 1 pm, followed by the men at 3.
