Pioneer Men Get Another 2-1 Win

ABILENE, Texas - In a match that included 33 fouls and five yellow cards, the Pioneers were able to record their second straight win with a 2-1 victory over McMurry University at Edwards Field on Friday afternoon.

The first goal of the match came in the 32nd minute when Pioneer junior Cody McClary went airborne and headed in a goal off a rebound of a Carlos Mellado header to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 advantage.

McMurry fought back with 15 shots in the first half, and scored when Tyler Tarango volleyed a corner kick past WBU goalie David Metcalfe at the 41 minute mark.

McClary broke the tie with his second goal of the game less than two minutes into the second period when his free kick from about 25 yards out went off the cross bar into the top left corner of the net.

WBU was outshot 21-11 and the hosts had two more shots on goal than the Pioneers, but Metcalfe came up with five saves before being replaced by Derek Bell after suffering an ankle sprain with just over 30 minutes remaining. Bell saved the only two shots on goal that he faced.

Pioneer coach Shiloh Posey said both his keepers made some very good saves. "In fact, we played well all over the field in a fairly adverse environment. Our defense was up against a very tall team, and although we lost Memo (freshman Guillermo Villarreal) early, Trevor Burkhead moved to the back and we never missed a beat."

Mellado led Wayland with four shots, three of which were on goal. McClary put his only two shots of the game into the net, and Cesar Vallin also produced a shot that required a save.

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday when they travel to Brownwood to take on Howard Payne University.
