Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist men's basketball team got the new year started off in the right direction with a 78-64 win over St. Gregory's University on the road Saturday night. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pioneers who improved to 6-6 on the season and 1-4 in SAC play.
George Williams put in a season-high 29 points for the WBU men. Bobby Watkins added 16. Brandon Jackson led the Cavaliers with 19 points.
The Pioneers shot 63 percent from the field in the game. They hit four of their first five three-pointers, and held a 44-25 at the intermission.
In the final 20 minutes, the WBU men made good on 13-of-their 19 field goal attempts, which helped negate an abysmal performance from the free throw line where they were just 7-of-19 (36.8%).
WBU won the rebounding battle, 35-25. Watkins and Williams both had seven boards each. Watkins also had a game-high four steals.
All three of Wayland's big men fouled out of the contest, but the Cavaliers struggled even more than the Pioneers from the charity stripe, hitting just 11 of their 23 attempts in the game. SGU did nail down nine treys.
The Pioneers return to action on Monday afternoon at 3:00 against Oklahoma Baptist University. The Bison were 73-55 winners over Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
