OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist women's wrestling team picked up another dual win this weekend. The Pioneers defeated #3 Cumberlands (Ky.) 25-18 on Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
The WBU women, which were ranked ninth in the first Women's College Wrestling Association poll of the year, also took on second-ranked Simon Fraser and #4 King College of Tennessee. SFU defeated the Pioneers 35-5, while King scored a 37-7 victory.
The school from Kentucky jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the Pioneers forfeited the 101 pound bout, but Ofelia Valdez and Nallely Carrillo put WBU in front with back-to-back decisions. Valdez took a 2-0, 1-0 victory over Alex Campbell at 109, and Carrillo won 3-0, 1-0 over Sherri Barube.
Cumberlands went back up 14-6 after a technical fall and a pin. Jessica Von Behren was beaten 6-0, 6-0 at 123 pounds, and freshman Tarkyia Mensah fell victim to the top ranked women's wrestler at 130, Cianah Hee.
Freshman Erin Miller got the Wayland women closer with a 3-2, 1-2, 2-1 decision at 136 over Olivia Peters, and then Tamrya Mensah picked up five points with a pin at 1:45 into the second period.
Another freshman, Valerie Rosales, was edged out at 155 by Sydney Nelson, who is ranked sixth at that weight by the WCWA. Nelson won the bout, 1-1, 6-0, and 1-0 to give her team the 18-15 advantage.
Obrianna Baidoo (170) and Angela Vyborny (191) won their weight classes by forfeit to give the Pioneers the victory, the second of the season for the young Wayland team.
Vyborny had the only win of the dual against King. The sophomore won by technical fall, 6-0, 7-0 over Kerri Bumpers.
The Mensah twins both picked up points against King. Tarkyia lost a 5-0, 4-1 decision to Kayla Brendlinger at 130, while Tamrya dropped a 4-0, 1-0 decision to Alli Ragan, the top-ranked female at 136, who competed at 143 on Sunday against the Pioneers.
Tamrya Mensah picked up the lone win against Simon Fraser, a 2-0, 3-0 decision at 143 over Sidney Morrison. Morrison is rated #5 at 155 pounds.
Valdez captured a point in her bout with Michiko Araki (4-1, 3-0), and Vyborny took Jenna McLatchy to three sets (0-3, 1-0, 1-0) at 191 to gain a point. McLatchy is ranked third at 170.
The Pioneers make one more trip to Oklahoma City on Sunday, Oct. 16 to compete against #5 Lindenwood (Mo.) and #13 Waldorf College (Ia.).
