Pioneers Get By First Hurdle

SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Pioneer volleyball team successfully got over its first postseason hurdle this afternoon with a three-set victory over John Brown University in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.  The WBU women took the match by scores of 27-25, 25-18 and 25-18.

Wayland advances to the semi-finals tonight against top-seed Oklahoma Baptist at 7:00.

Tatiana Gonzalez had a team-high 17 kills to go along with 14 digs.  Kate Trejos added 12 kills and 13 digs, and Natasha Giacomazzi posted a team-best 18 digs to go with her 38 assists.

Coach Jim Giacomazzi was especially pleased with his team's defensive effort.  The Pioneers recorded a season-best in digs for a three-set match with 96.

"The girls were ready to play today.  We're on a mission and they know that this was just the first hurdle.  We've got another one to get over in just a few hours."

Senior middle Kimberli Harger, junior libero Jaharys Archilla and outside hitter Alissa Hodgson also hit the double figure mark in digs with 15 each.
