OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Pioneer women's wrestling team has made tremendous improvement in the past year, climbing to #5 in the latest WCWA poll. On Wednesday evening, after nearly a month off, the Wayland women faced off against defending national champion Oklahoma City University and became yet another victim of the top-ranked Stars in a 42-5 defeat.
Sophomore Samantha Gonzales scored the lone WBU points of the dual, pinning Logan Rich 14 seconds into the third period of their match. Gonzales, who was unranked in the latest WCWA poll at 123 pounds, split the first two periods with Rich, 6-3 and 0-3.
WBU Coach Johnny Cobb's squad was without the services of three individuals who are among the top eight in their respective weight classes. Junior Ofelia Valdez (101) and sophomore Brenda Mendoza (170), both ranked number six, and freshman Miriam Moreno, ranked second at 191 pounds, did not make the trip.
OCU has won 48 consecutive duals and is 63-0-1 in their past 64. Five of the Star wrestlers that competed against the Pioneers are number one in their respective weight classes, and two others are ranked second.
The WBU women will return to action on Saturday with a dual at The Courts in Amarillo against #4 Lindenwood University at 9 a.m. The Pioneers then face a rematch against the Stars next Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Hutcherson Center. That dual begins at 7 p.m.
