DALLAS, Texas --- It took them a while to get started, but once they did, the Wayland women exploded for four goals in a seven minute span on their way to an impressive 12-0 victory over Dallas Christian College on Monday afternoon. Sophomore Emarie Holland recorded the third hat trick in WBU history, and ten Pioneers scored at least one point in the win.
Three freshmen finally got the ball rolling for the Pioneer women. Madison Abbott and Annysa Plata each scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes apart. Abbott's goal came 12:23 into the game. Plata made it 2-0 at the 14:10 mark, and then Jordan James got the ball across the goalline off an assist by Corita Kraemer a little more than two minutes after that.
"We started slower than I wanted," said WBU coach Shiloh Posey, "but picked it up fairly quickly. Before the game we talked a lot about being physically stronger and winning some of those 50/50 balls. We did that better much better today than on Saturday."
Kraemer, a sophomore from Lafayette, La., got the next two goals for the Pioneers. Zoe Benson was credited with the assist on the first, and Sarah Lauderdale picked up her first point of the season on the second.
A sophomore from Burkburnett, Texas, Holland scored the sixth goal of the game at the 37:51 mark, and then knocked in another that made it 8-0 at the intermission.
Holland's third goal came nine minutes into the second period and was assisted by Katherine Teinert. A freshman from Portland, Texas, Teinert found the back of the net twice herself, scoring the first and last goals of the final half.
Sarah Castro, a freshman from San Antonio, put in the game's seventh goal off a pass by Teinert, and then recorded an unassisted goal just over five minutes into the second period that made it 10-0. She also picked up a point with an assist on Holland's second goal.
The six point games turned in by Holland and Teinert tied a WBU record. Another school record was tied by freshman Megan Huerta who was credited with three assists. The 2011 Van Vleck High School graduate assisted on Holland's first goal and on both of Teinert's.
The 12 goals scored by the Pioneers established a new school mark and junior goal keeper Courtney Chambers tied a record with her second career shutout.
According to Posey, Dallas Christian was low in numbers and suffered a couple of injuries that also caused them to struggle.
"With the type of game it was, we were able to work on some things in the second half that we don't often have the opportunity to do. We tried out some specific movements and motions and some crossing patterns that should help us out in the future.
"We've started off in the right direction," said Posey about his team, which improved to 2-1 with the win. "We have Northwood coming up at home on Monday and that will be a much bigger challenge, but it is one that is doable."
The Pioneer women's game against Northwood at Hilliard Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. They also have a home game on Friday, Sept. 9 against Southwest Christian University. That contest is slated for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
