Freshman Jordan James' third goal of the season at the 15:39 mark of the contest was all the help the Wayland Baptist women would need in a 2-0 victory over Southwestern Christian University on Friday at Hilliard Field.
The Pioneers were given some breathing room with about seven minutes gone in the second period when a SCU player inadvertently headed the ball into her own net. From there Shiloh Posey's squad buttoned down the hatches and played solid defense to pick up their fourth win of the season.
The shutout is the third of the year for junior goalkeeper Courtney Chambers, a new Pioneer record. Chambers stopped all four of her chances and faced just seven shots in the game.
"I'm proud of the way everyone played," said Posey, whose team is now 4-1. "It wasn't the prettiest win, but the ladies never quit working and the persistence paid off. We took plenty of shots on goal, but must continue to work at finishing"
WBU had 28 shots during the late afternoon contest with 18 of those making it on goal, but only James's got past SCU keeper Allie McIntosh.
A w011 graduate of Gregory-Portland High School, James had a team-high nine shots against the Lady Eagles and forced saves on five of those. Zoe Benson, a sophomore who got the assist on after her indirect kick landed perfectly for James on the tight right side of the goal, put four shots on net.
The Pioneers, who don't play again at home until Oct. 6 when they take on conference opponent St. Gregory's University, travel to Hobbs, N.M. next Friday for a game against the University of the Southwest.
"I'm looking forward to improving this week at practice," added Posey, "and preparing for USW."
