HOBBS, N.M. --- One mistake in the first period made the difference in a 1-0 Pioneer loss to the University of the Southwest in men's soccer action Friday evening. The Wayland Baptist men outshot the home team and put twice as many shots on goal, but the Mustangs scored the game's only point at the 16:29 mark of the game.
"We are so young and immature right now," said Jamath Shoffner, who is in his first year as head of the WBU men's program. "They had two shots on goal and we dominated the game. We had one mental lapse off a throw-in and they scored. With so many young players, we have to play 90 minutes, not 70, if we want to win."
The Pioneers had 12 shots, led by Jevaughn Vance with six, but for the third straight game struggled to put one past the opponent's goalie. The Wayland men have scored just three goals in the last four games, and two of those were on penalty kicks.
WBU freshman goalkeeper John-Ramses Thomas (2-1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, and the Pioneer men dropped to 3-3-1. They have one more nonconference contest, Monday afternoon against Eastern New Mexico University, before beginning Sooner Athletic Conference action on Thursday, Sept. 29 at Rogers State.
The game at ENMU is slated to begin at 5 p.m. Central Time.
