OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist volleyball team got its first Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season on Friday evening with a four-set victory over Mid-America Christian University. The Pioneers took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-19, dropped the third 25-23, and came back in the fourth, 25-18.
Wayland now has an overall record of 12-4 and evened up its conference mark at 1-1. MACU drops to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in SAC play.
Senior Kate Trejos had a match-high 22 kills and was credited with 13 digs. Kimberli Harger, also a senior, posted 15 and had 15 digs.
Sophomore setter Natasha Giacomazzi recorded a double-double with 45 assists and 15 digs. She was also in on three blocks.
Two other senior Pioneers hit the double digit mark in digs. Tatiana Gonzalez and Alissa Mitchell registered 13 and 11 digs respectively. Mitchell also nailed down a team-high three aces.
WBU Coach Jim Giacomazzi wasn't particularly pleased with his team's performance against the Lady Evangels.
"All I can say is that we didn't play well, but we played hard. Our hitting wasn't good, but defensively we hustled. We'll have to play better than that tomorrow though if we want to come away with a win in Arkansas."
Giacomazzi's squad takes on John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. on Saturday afternoon at 1:00. JBU is 11-6 on the season and fell to 1-1 in conference play after dropping a close 3-2 decision to Lubbock Christian on Friday.
