Pioneers Hang On for First Conference Win

Box Score

The Wayland Baptist men picked up their first conference win of the season on Thursday evening at Hutcherson Center with a 72-69 victory over St. Gregory's University.

Senior George Williams led the Pioneers with 22 points.  He hit four treys in the game and was perfect on all eight of his free throw attempts.  Bobby Watkins and TJ Jacobs also reached double digits for the WBU men.  Watkins, a senior from Amarillo, just missed recording a double-double, putting in 11 points and pulling down nine rebounds.  Jacobs had ten points and a team-high five assists.

SGU's Fayzon Richey, the leading scorer in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 20.7 per game average, increased that total against the Pioneers, putting in 36 points.  The senior hit six three-pointers and was 12-of-13 from the charity stripe.

WBU had an eight point lead with just over two minutes remaining, but Richey went to work, scoring 13 of his team's final 15 points.  The Pioneers hung on with good free throw shooting down the stretch, hitting eight of their final ten attempts.  They went 21-of-24 on the night.

Wayland, which had some troubles taking care of the ball in its last couple of games, had just nine turnovers against SGU.  The WBU men also won the battle on the boards, 37-33, and had 19 second chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.

The Pioneers evened up their record at 7-7 and are 1-5 in conference play.  St. Greg's fell to 3-9 and 0-6.  WBU hosts third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.  The Bison defeated Lubbock Christian 80-71 in the first game of their Texas road trip.
