Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – Falling victim to the old adage that, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong,” the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team lost to Oklahoma Baptist in a Sooner Athletic Conference match here Thursday afternoon, 3-0.
“It was one of those days when things were just off,” Pioneers coach
Shiloh Posey said. “Every bounce that could have gone right for them did, and every bounce that could have gone right for us didn't.”
The Pioneers (6-5 overall, 0-2 SAC) managed eight shots on goal compared to just six for OBU (4-5, 2-0), but the Lady Bison made half of theirs count while Wayland couldn't seem to buy a goal.
“We had 3-4 good opportunities to score in the first 10 minutes, and did not finish. That's the reason it is so disappointing," Posey said. "You cannot get those types of chances and not capitalize. OBU is too good, and if you don't do your job, they can make you pay for it.”
OBU's first goal – from some 40 yards away just over 14 minutes into the contest – was something every player dreams about.
“Our goalkeeper had come out for a ball and had fallen down. Our defender got the ball cleared, but not far enough. OBU's player hit a good shot and put the ball in the upper corner of the goal.”
Posey said his team will “have to do a better job of defending further up in the field so that we don't allow those types of second chances.”
Up 1-0 at halftime, the Lady Bison scored again just over 10 minutes into the second half on a fast break.
“We let No. 20 (from OBU) get behind us. Zoe (Benson) did a good job of recovering, but couldn't quite make the tackle before the shot was taken,” Posey said.
The shot stayed on the ground and went in at the near post.
“It was the kind of shot that we normally deal well with, but give their player credit. She made the most of her chance and got the goal.”.
OBU's final goal, with just four minutes left in the game, came from about 25 yards out on a free kick.
“We just didn't get to it,” Posey said.
Emarie Holland had three shots on goal and
Katherine Teinert two for Wayland.
Haley Reiser,
Jessica Bell and
Madison Abbott added one each.
Posey said the Pioneers had two prime scoring chances in the game's first five minutes, including one when Teinert had the OBU keeper beaten after a corner kick.
“The shot went just wide,” he said.
Teinert came close again when a second-half attempt hit off the crossbar and bounced in front of the line. Reiser also had a near goal, Posey said.
The coach said the game was physical, and the Pioneers “kept their heads and stayed in it. That showed a lot of maturity. They played until the final whistle.”
”Absolutely, it's disappointing to lose, but we have to learn and move on," he added. "Coach (Mike) White has developed a very solid team, and my hat is off to him and his group, and I wish them the best.”
The Pioneers next take on St. Gregory's (0-9-1, 0-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“The girls have a really bitter taste in their mouths right now and they're ready to play again,” Posey said. “They're sick of the ball not bouncing their way. They're ready to get after it and they're looking for a win.
“We're looking forward to Saturday.”
