Women’s soccer bows out of conference tourney in OKC

The 2012 Wayland women's soccer team
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team gave a valiant effort in its attempt to topple No. 7-ranked Oklahoma City University in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament here today, but ended up falling 2-0.

The No. 8 seed Pioneers (8-9-1) knew they had a significant challenge in taking on No. 1 seed OCU (17-1), especially with the Stars having home field advantage. Two early goals by OCU at the 6:05 and 15:20 marks were enough to seal the victory and knock Wayland out of the tournament.

Head coach Shiloh Posey said that although his players were disappointed to have their season come to an end, he was proud of their determination.

“Our team effort overall was really good and we had a couple of players back from injuries who were able to contribute time,” he said. “Haley Reiser and Emarie Holland were back on the field today and they were obviously not at 100 percent yet, but they both gave a good effort.

“A couple of mistakes cost us early in the game. That first goal was six minutes in. The ball came in from a cross on the left side of the field and OKC's right wing cut inside our defender. She was able to put the ball in the back of the net on a header.”

The Stars struck again less than 10 minutes later to put more distance between the squads.

“The ball got played up to their forwards and our defense closed them down, but one of their girls took a nice shot in the upper corner of the goal and we just couldn't close fast enough,” Posey said. “We got off some decent shots and improved from the last time we played them (on Oct. 20). We also cut down the number of shots they had this time around.”

Wayland took seven shots in the contest, with one on goal, while OCU fired off 24 shots, seven of those on goal. WBU senior goalkeeper Courtney Chambers ended with five saves on the day.

“Obviously we're disappointed by this loss and we weren't ready for the season to end today,” Posey said. “We're already looking to the off season though. We'll just continue to improve and be that much better next year.”
