AMARILLO – The Wayland Baptist men's and women's wrestling teams got in a full day of competition on Saturday at the Raider Duals, with the women winning three of four matches and the men taking one of three against some tough competition.
“It was a good day,” Wayland coach
Johnny Cobb said. “The kids really stepped up. We're obviously getting better and better.”
On the men's side, Wayland started the day with a 27-16 loss to Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) followed by a 24-16 defeat to No. 19 Bacone (Okla.). The Pioneers ended the day with a dominating 40-5 victory over Central Baptist College (Ark.).
Cobb said the Pioneers “were right in” the two duals they lost.
“They just didn't quite go our way,” he said. “We had a lot of great performances and had a lot of good wins.”
Sophomore
John Mark Avila, of Canyon Randall High School, was back on his home mats and had a strong day in the 149-pound division, giving up only one point while going 3-0 and earning 13 points for Wayland. Another sophomore,
Chris Hart of Katy, also went 3-0 in 141s and picked up 12 points, “wrestling hard-nosed and strong offensively,” according to assistant coach
Luke Salazar.
“The kids all performed well,” Cobb said.
Salazar agreed.
“As a whole, the team had some breakout performances and we hope to carry the momentum on to Oklahoma City,” said Salazar, looking ahead to Thursday's dual at OCU. “We're building in a positive direction through continued hard work.”
The WBU women also started out the day with a loss to Lindenwood (Mo.), but the Pioneers then reeled off three straight victories over Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.), Winnipeg (Canada) and Waldorf (Iowa). Scores and individual statistics were not immediately available.
“Lindenwood was really tough. They're one of the top-rated teams in the country,” Cobb said. “But the girls competed really well.”
The WBU women also compete Thursday at OCU. Wayland was due to host the Stars on Nov. 20, but that dual was canceled.
Cobb said his teams continue to improve each outing.
“We still don't quite have everybody in the lineup that we can count on,” he said of a handful of redshirted and injured wrestlers. “This is all practice for going to nationals. We're right on the verge of really stepping over the line and being one of the top teams.”
Saturday's competition came less than 24 hours after Wayland hosted its lone dual of the season on Friday. The women defeated a limited squad from Northwest Technical (Kan.), 39-8, while the men fell to No. 14 Menlo (Calif.), 27-12.
