Cavalier Men Blaze Past Pioneers

SHAWNEE, Okla. --- St. Gregory's University won its third Sooner Athletic Conference game of the year on Saturday afternoon with an 85-63 decision over the Wayland men at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse on the SGU campus. 

 

Fayzon Richey had 12 of his game-high 32 points in the first half as the Cavaliers took a 40-29 lead into the break.  The home team, which hit 61 percent (17-of-28) of its shots in the opening 20 minutes, was even hotter in the final period, connecting on 63 percent (17-of-27) from the field.

Wayland, meanwhile, shot 50 percent (12-of-24) in the first half, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arch, but cooled off considerably after the break, hitting 37.5 percent (9-of-24).

After getting just one free throw attempt in the first period, the Pioneers went to the line 18 times in the second half, converting on 12.

TJ Jacobs came in off the bench to hit 4-of-5 treys, and paced the Pioneers with 16 points.  Robert Curtis added 14.

SGU held the advantage on the boards 29-28, and had nine fewer turnovers.  The Cavs picked up 30 points off 26 Pioneer miscues.

The WBU men drop to 10-18 overall and 4-16 in league play.  They will conclude the year with home games on Thursday against Northwestern Oklahoma State and on Saturday versus Oklahoma Christian.  The Pioneers' six seniors – George Williams, Isaiah Jackson, Jamie Eisinger, Bobby Watkins, Johnny Terra and Rodrigo Silva – will be honored prior to Saturday's contest.
