HOBBS, N.M. -- After winning its last match at the University of Colorado-Pueblo on Saturday, the Wayland Baptist University volleyball team used the forward momentum to take the victory over the University of the Southwest in three sets Tuesday night in Hobbs, N.M. The Pioneers won the match 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 and improved their season record to 3-7.
Head coach
Jim Giacomazzi said several of his players had a great night.
"Shahala (Hawkins) had a great night with 11 kills and hit over .400 and Chelsey (Driskill) had 14 kills," he said. "Defensively, we had a good blocking night as Chelsey had two solo blocks and a couple of block assists and Shahala had one solo and five assists. Abby (Welch) had a solo block and an assist as well. Tania (Gomez) and Jaharys (Archilla) both turned in 19 digs."
With such a young team on the floor including seven true freshmen, Giacomazzi says he knows his team still has a lot more work to do.
"We keep trying to take a couple steps forward and minimize those backward steps," he said. "We were pretty sluggish in that first set and came out a little flat, I think due to road legs. We were able to maintain our lead through the two sets and really dominated in the second. In the third set, we started out down 6-2 because of sloppiness and some missed passes, but got back into it and took the lead.
"We have to learn to maintain our intensity and stay even keel. I have high expectations for this team and am going to keep their feet to the fire so they keep moving forward.
The Pioneers travel to Lubbock this Friday and Saturday for the Lady Chap Classic at Lubbock Christian University. The team will take on College of the Ozarks at 3 p.m. Friday and will face a rematch with the University of the Southwest at 1 p.m. Saturday
