WBU women's soccer gets shut out on the road

Box Score Box Score Wayland Baptist University head coach Shiloh Posey was hoping his team would bounce back quickly from a tough midweek loss as they faced Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon, but a sluggish start led to the team's downfall as they fell 4-0. "Coming off that game Thursday night (a 1-0 loss to Texas Wesleyan), I guess we were just emotionally and physically spent," Posey said. "But all excuses aside, we didn't play well at all in the first half. We got pushed around, played scared and gave them multiple opportunities to score. You can't give free chances to a team that good." The Pioneers (3-3) came away with three shots and two shots on goal in the game, while Hardin-Simmons posted 24 shots and nine shots on goal. The Cowgirls (2-0-1), who in the preseason were ranked No. 10 in the nation in NCAA Division III, also scored three of their four goals on headers off corner kicks. Posey said his team made some adjustments at halftime, but couldn't get on the scoreboard. "We had a 'come to Jesus' meeting at the half, made some adjustments and kept them scoreless in the second half," he said. "At least we gained some of our self-respect back and showed more of the team we really are. I think we learned some valuable lessons and will have some things to work on this next week. "We just got completely outplayed in the first half and it hurt us. It was like we were running the 100-meter dash and we let them get 50 meters down the track before we even got out of the blocks." The Pioneers don't play another game until midweek, and Posey is looking forward to the break. "We're thankful for these three days off," he said. "It will give us a chance to work on things and heal from our bumps and bruises." WBU soccer will host Southwestern Assemblies of God University in a doubleheader Wednesday, with the women's game at 4 p.m., followed by the men at 6.
