After helping knock the 22
nd-ranked team out of the NAIA Top 25 poll last week, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers are looking to do the same to the No. 23 club on Thursday night when coach
Matt Garnett's squad hits the road to take on the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
The Pioneers (12-6 overall, 3-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) toppled No. 22 Oklahoma City, 70-68, on Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center, prompting the Stars' fall out of the Top 25 poll. OCU (8-4, 1-3) also lost to Lubbock Christian last Thursday, 81-71 in overtime.
Winners of six of their last seven games, the Pioneers' lone game this week comes against 23
rd-ranked USAO (8-4, 1-3) at 8 p.m. Thursday in Chickasha, Okla. The Flying Queens also take on USAO at 6 p.m.
OCU's disappearance from the poll leaves the SAC with four ranked teams: No. 5 Oklahoma Baptist, No. 10 John Brown University, No. 20 Rogers State and No. 23 USAO.
The Drovers have dropped three in a row to OCU, 76-70; John Brown, 68-58; and OBU, 61-53. USAO's lone SAC win came against Rogers State, 78-71. USAO sports two of the top five scorers in the SAC in Brandon Cutler and Norris Rumph, both averaging almost 16 points per game.
On the women's side, the SAC features three ranked teams in the NAIA Top 25 where Lubbock Christian lost its No. 1 billing following a 79-68 home loss to OCU, which moved up from No. 6 to No. 4. The SAC's other ranked team is Rogers State, tied for 13
th.
The USAO women (9-7, 0-4) are looking for their first conference win after falling to Rogers State, 66-64; OCU, 98-42; John Brown, 69-60; and OBU, 58-52.
The Flying Queens (11-8, 3-2) go into Thursday's game in fourth place in the SAC. Wayland already has faced the highest two ranked teams in the league, LCU and OCU, in the first half of SAC play.
