Despite a home loss last week, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team improved one spot to No. 21 in the Tachikara-NAIA Coaches' poll.
The Pioneers (16-3 overall, 3-1 SAC) defeated Southwestern Christian, 25-13, 25-15, 25-15, on Friday before falling to No. 12 Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 31-29. The loss ended Wayland's nine-match win streak.
OBU (14-4) remained at No. 12 in this week's poll. No other Sooner Athletic Conference teams are ranked or receiving votes.
It marks the third straight poll Wayland has improved its ranking. The Pioneers were rated the equivalent of No. 33 in the preseason poll, moved to No. 24 in the first regular-season poll, then were ranked No. 23 last week.
Wayland plays a non-conference match at 7 p.m. tonight in Hutcherson Center against NCAA Division II opponent University of Texas-Permian Basin (5-9).
Tonight's match marks the start of the second annual Block for the Cure promotion in which WBU head coach
Jim Giacomazzi will donate $5 for each block the Pioneers record during their five home matches in October. The money will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The top-four teams retained their positions, led by No. 1 Concordia (Calif.), in the fourth regular-season poll. Concordia is followed by No. 2 Texas at Brownsville, No. 3 Biola (Calif.), and No. 4 Madonna (Mich.).
Â
Thirteen of 23 conferences are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference with five ranked teams, Concordia, Biola, No. 10 Westmont, No. 16 The Master's and No. 20 Vanguard. The Great Plains Athletic Conference lands four programs in the poll.
Â
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The fifth regular-season Top 25 will be announced Oct. 8.
