OKLAHOMA CITY – Nobody can accuse the Wayland Baptist women's wrestling team of dodging the competition.
The seventh-ranked Pioneers concluded a killer season-opening week by finishing in fourth place at the prestigious Oklahoma City University Open on Saturday. Wayland won its fifth straight match of the tournament by defeating ninth-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.), 25-17, before falling to top-ranked King (Tenn.), 41-3, and finally to No. 2 Oklahoma City in the third-place match, 27-15.
That came after Wayland was perfect in pool competition Friday, defeating No. 4 Lindenwood (Mo.), 24-19, No. 5 Jamestown (N.D.), 29-16, No. 11 Waldorf (Iowa), 38-8, and Cumberlands Red, 41-6.
"We beat the No. 4, 5, 9 and 11 teams," WBU coach
Johnny Cobb said in reviewing his team's weekend when their only losses were to the top two ranked teams. "We started it off with a bang. They did great. That was a really great showing."
King went on to defeat third-ranked and defending WCWA champion Simon Fraser (Vancouver, B.C.), in the championship, 35-9. Wayland had already faced Simon Fraser in a season-opening dual in Plainview on Wednesday, falling, 26-17.
"I'm real proud of the way we wrestled," said Cobb, who figures Wayland will be ranked No. 4 in the next WCWA poll based on its victories over current No. 4 Lindenwood and No. 5 Jamestown.
Tamyra Mensah, ranked No. 2 in the 143-pound division, was perfect on the weekend, going 7-0 with wins over the Nos. 3, 5 and 8 wrestlers, along with the No. 2 wrestler at 170.
Tamika Jones, competing for the WBU Gold team, also was 7-0 on the weekend.
Samantha Villegas, in the 136s, lost only once in Oklahoma City, falling to the World Team national champion Alli Ragan of King while besting the No. 2, 5 and 9 wrestlers.
Vanessa Smith in the 101s,
Tarkyia Mensah in the 130s and No. 3
Angela Vyborny in the 191s all posted 5-2 records, with Mensah beating the No. 6- and 10-ranked wrestlers and Vyborny taking out the No. 2 wrestler from OCU. Fifth-ranked
Valerie Rosales was 4-3 with a victory over the No. 6 wrestler.
Weekend records for other WBU wrestlers were:
Kierra Boyce, 5-1;
Nina Wyre, 3-1;
Brenda Mendoza, 3-4;
Cheyenne Kemp, 3-3;
Dineesha Jones, 3-3;
Michele Guerrero, 2-3; No. 7
Jesse Von Behren, 2-5; Kristine Navarette, 1-6; and
Kiley Flores, 0-2.
Cobb said
Tarkyia Mensah, Villegas and Smith all should be ranked in the top five when the next individual rankings are released. WBU's
Lauryn Bruggink, No. 8 in the 116s, did not compete this weekend.
