With the post-season right around the corner, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team surged into the top 10 to a program-best No. 9 in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll.
Â
The Pioneers, who are 13-2-1 overall and 8-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, jumped from No. 13 in last week's poll. Wayland's previous highest ranking this season was No. 10 three weeks ago.
Â
The Pioneers have won five in a row and 13 of their last 14 matches going into Saturday afternoon's regular-season finale in Bethany, Okla., against Southwestern Christian University (9-6, 4-4). With a win, WBU will secure the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament, which sees matches played at the home of the higher seed. That means as long as the Pioneers keep winning in the conference tourney, they'll host.
Â
If the Pioneers lose to Southwestern Christian, USAO (10-4, 7-1), which is ranked the equivalent of 26
th, could still finish ahead of WBU if the Drovers beat both Oklahoma City at home on Friday and at Northwood next Tuesday. If WBU and USAO tie for first, Wayland holds the tie-breaker based on its 2-1 overtime win over the Drovers.
Â
The first round of the SAC Men's Soccer Tournament tentatively is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8. The Wayland women, currently in the No. 4 position in the conference standings, also could host at least a first-round match.
Â
Oklahoma City, at No. 20, is the only SAC team ranked in the women's Top 25. John Brown received votes and is the equivalent of 35
th.
Â
Rio Grande (Ohio) of the Mid-South Conference sits atop the Top 25 men's poll for the second-straight week with a 12-1-2 record. The Red Storm is followed by Grand View (Iowa), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), Ashford (Iowa), and Oklahoma Wesleyan.
The polls were voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups.
