After taking Oklahoma Baptist to five sets last week, the Wayland Baptist volleyball team remained at No. 17 while the Lady Bison jumped one spot to seventh in this week's Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25.
The Pioneers (25-5 overall, 10-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) dropped a 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10 decision to OBU last Friday night in Shawnee, Okla., before beating Southwestern Christian University in three on Saturday morning. The loss to OBU virtually assured the Lady Bison will host the SAC Tournament on Nov. 15 and 16.
Wayland plays its final regular-season home matches against Texas Wesleyan (15-16, 7-5) at 7 p.m. Friday followed by Southwestern Assemblies of God (14-13, 7-6) at 11 a.m. Saturday. WBU ends the regular-season on the road against John Brown (13-16, 7-5) on Nov. 8 and at St. Gregory's (5-20, 2-10) on Nov. 9.
WBU was the equivalent of No. 33 in the preseason before moving to No. 24 in the first regular-season poll. The Pioneers made one-spot jumps all the way to No. 20, jumped two spots to No. 18, then moved to No. 17 two weeks ago.
Texas at Brownsville holds the No.1 ranking in the eighth regular-season edition of the Top 25 poll. The Ocelots are No. 1 for the second-straight week after sweeping Concordia (Calif.), 3-0, on Oct. 19 in Brownsville, ending Concordia's 55-match winning streak, which was the third-longest in NAIA history. UT-Brownsville is one of two NAIA programs still undefeated at 25-0. Concordia (Calif.) sits at No. 2.
No. 4 Madonna (Mich.) is the other undefeated team in the NAIA at 33-0.
Thirteen of 23 conferences are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference with five ranked teams, Concordia, No. 3 Biola, No. 11 The Master's (Calif.), No. 12 Vanguard (Calif.) and No. 14 Westmont (Calif.). The Great Plains Athletic Conference, Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and American Midwest Conference each land three programs in the poll.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The ninth regular-season Top 25 will be announced Nov. 5.
