Box Score
The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team continued its recent hot streak Saturday afternoon at J.V. Hilliard Field in a match against McMurry University. The Pioneers defeated the War Hawks in dominating fashion, 3-0.
Â
It was Wayland's third straight overall win and second straight 3-0 victory, having also shut out rival Lubbock Christian on the road Tuesday.
Â
Against the War Hawks (0-1-1), Wayland (4-1-1) was able to maintain possession of the ball for most of the half, but could not get on the scoreboard in the first half. The second half was a different story, however, as the ball rarely left McMurry's side of the pitch, and Wayland was able to score three goals without allowing the War Hawks to scratch.
Â
The first goal came less than 10 minutes into the first half when
Vitalis Atemafac passed the ball to
Erik Luzanilla, who in turn crossed the ball to a sliding
David Neuberth. The junior from Sykesville, Md., snuck past the defenders and put the ball in the back of the net.
Â
After assisting Neuberth for the first goal of the match, it was Luzanilla's turn to score. In the 70
th minute after receiving a pass from
Travis Somersall,
Juan Sanchez crossed the ball to Luzanilla, who made a spectacular volley just past the diving goal keeper to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. It was Luzanilla's fourth goal of the week, having recorded the program's first-ever hat trick on Tuesday in his first outing as a Pioneer.
Â
Just 2 ½ minutes after Luzanilla scored, Sanchez was at it again, this time assisting Neuberth for his second goal of the game. Sanchez dribbled passed a defender in the box before giving the ball up to Neuberth, who sealed the goal and the game.
Â
The War Hawks were overwhelmed by the Pioneers' offense as WBU outshot McMurry an astonishing 25-0.
Â
The Pioneers next host the University of Texas-Permian Basin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, after the women's match at 5. The Falcons are 2-0, with wins over Fort Hays State (3-0) and Colorado State-Pueblo (6-3), going into a Saturday night contest at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tuesday's outing will be the Pioneers' final match before opening Sooner Athletic Conference play on Sept. 27 at home against Mid-America Christian.
