Box Score SAN ANGELO – After starting 3-0 for the first time in the program's history, the Wayland Baptist University women's soccer team finally met its match. The Pioneers fell to Angelo State University on Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
Just two days removed from a match in which Wayland (3-1) outshot its opponent 25-3, WBU found itself on the opposite end of the spectrum as Angelo State (1-1-1) outshot the Pioneers 12-3.
Jessica Bell had one shot in the first half and
Emarie Holland had two shots in the second.
"We've been having games where we're getting 20-plus shots, but today we only had three," head coach
Shiloh Posey said. "We had a couple opportunities and a penalty kick, but couldn't score. We need to work on taking advantage of the opportunities we get."
ASU had six shots in the first half before finally breaking the 0-0 tie when Jenny Kotowych scored her first goal of the season in the 30
th minute.
Just 5 1/2 minutes later Kotowych put the ball in the back of the net again for her second goal of the game and season, giving the Rambelles a 2-0 lead.
"I thought we came out kind of slow today," Posey said. "We were able to hold them off for a while, but we went into halftime down 2-0.
"We had a conversation during halftime and I think they responded well. When we came out for the second half I think we played better."
The Pioneers were able to slow the Rambelles down in the second half, but Kathleen Keoughn was able to put another point up on the board in the 61
st minute.
Down 3-0, the Pioneers seemed to play their best after sitting through a brief rain delay in the 70
th minute.
"We had a 30-minute rain delay, and when we came out we played really well. If we would have played like we did the last 15 minutes the entire match, I think we would have been in a better position at the end of the game.
"When you're going on a journey there's going to be some ups and downs, but I think the girls responded well after tonight's loss. They were disappointed but not in a way that they were dwelling on it. We're going to go to class on Monday and head to Lubbock to take on LCU and hopefully we'll play well there."
Wayland will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Lubbock Christian on Tuesday to take on the Chaparrals at 2 p.m. The WBU and LCU men battle immediately after the conclusion of the women's match.
