Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. –
Shiloh Posey knows he's starting to sound like a broken record, but he doesn't care.
"I can't say enough about our team effort. I know I say that every time, but everybody gives everything they can and it shows," Posey said after Wayland Baptist's women's soccer team downed Oklahoma Baptist in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon, 1-0.
It truly took a team effort against OBU, ranked the equivalent of 28
th in the nation.
On an unseasonably warm afternoon, Posey said players on both teams were gassed by the end of the match. The only difference was Wayland's players had smiles on their faces as the Pioneers spoiled OBU's Senior Recognition Day.
The match's lone score came just before the 28
th minute on what Posey called a "textbook" play.
Jessica Bell passed the ball to
Tori Nimtz on the right wing where her cross kick floated just over a defender's head to Morris, who then slammed home her team-high sixth goal of the season.
"Jodian hammered the ball into the back of the net," Posey said. "Those three pieces of the play were as textbook as I've ever seen."
Wayland spent the rest of the afternoon protecting its lead.
"OBU threw everything at us that they could," Posey said. "They had the majority of possession, but we were able to defend."
With temperatures approaching 80 degrees, it wasn't easy.
"The last 15 minutes everybody for both teams was walking a lot," he said. "The girls gave everything they had. It's a testament to their will."
The result – Wayland's second in as many years over OBU – leaves the Pioneers (5-8-2 overall, 5-2-1 SAC) and Lady Bison (10-5-1, 5-2-1) tied for second in the SAC standings, just behind Science and Arts of Oklahoma (15-1, 6-1). WBU is a half-game ahead of John Brown (8-4-2, 4-2-1), which hosted fifth-place Texas Wesleyan (8-4, 4-2) later Saturday. Wayland was coming off a 1-0 road loss to Texas Wesleyan, which followed a 0-0 tie with John Brown. That came after a three-match win streak for the Pioneers.
"This really solidifies us to finish in the top three in the conference," Posey said.
That's important because the top four finishers will host first-round matches in the conference tournament. Wayland hosted a playoff match for the first time in school history last season when the Pioneers were third in the league.
Wayland wraps up the regular-season beginning at 4 p.m. Friday at home against Southwestern Christian (7-8, 2-5). It will be Senior Day for the Pioneers.
"We'll keep working and come out Friday and do our best," Posey said.
