Flying Queens can't maintain lead, fall to No. 11 OLLU

Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Wayland Baptist owned a 10-point second-half lead over 11th-ranked Our Lady of the Lake, but the Flying Queens couldn't make it stand up as they fell to the Saints here Saturday afternoon, 91-84.

Wayland (3-3), ranked the equivalent of 28th, was ahead 50-40 before OLLU (3-2) got back in it on the strength of a 10-2 run. The Saints then took their first lead since midway through the first half when they went up 64-63 with 10 minutes left in the game. That was part of an 8-0 run that saw OLLU assume a 68-63 edge.

The Queens never led again.

Wayland fell behind by as many as 14 points before three 3-pointers by Laura Castillo and Shawna Monreal in the final three minutes closed the gap.

Castillo, who was 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and Stephanie Afunugo each had 18 points to lead the Queens, followed by Monreal and LaTericka Anderson with 13 apiece. Iesha Greer added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Afunugo contributed eight assists.

Wayland held a statistical edge in many categories, including field goal shooting where the Queens made 47 percent (35-of-75) compared to OLLU's 37 percent (31-of-84). WBU also outrebounded the Saints, 50-49.

But OLLU outscored Wayland 20-8 at the free-throw line and 23-6 on second-chance points as the Saints grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, seven more than the Flying Queens, who also were hurt by 23 turnovers, seven more than OLLU.

OLLU had five players in double figures, led by Sonji Green with 16 points and Courtney Bayliss with 15.

Wayland's next outing is against Southwestern Christian University in the Flying Queens' Sooner Athletic Conference opener at 6 p.m. Thursday in Oklahoma City. The Eagles (4-5) have played a formidable schedule, falling twice to No. 24 Langston and once to No. 6 Lyon. Southwestern Christian plays Oral Roberts University on Tuesday.
