David Neuberth's school-record tying three goals powered the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Howard Payne here Friday afternoon.
Neuberth was credited with nine shots – all on goal – as he led Wayland (4-2) to its third consecutive victory.
Howard Payne (0-4) remained winless on the season, although the Yellow Jackets went up 1-0 when Shay Pate scored almost 17 minutes in.
It took only 10 seconds for Wayland to answer as Neuberth netted his first goal at the 17:08 mark.
Neuberth got the game-winner at the 52:14 mark then picked up an insurance goal 74 minutes in.
Neuberth's three goals matched the program record held by
Erik Luzanilla and
Vitalis Atemafac, who both reached three during the 2013 season against Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Baptist, respectively.
A senior forward from Sykesville, Md., Neuberth had one goal on the season prior to breaking through today. He scored nine goals last season, matching a school record. His nine shots on-goal breaks the previous record of seven set by Saman Hassan against Dallas Christian in 2011, and his nine shots breaks the record of eight set by Luzanilla against LCU last year and Jevaughn Vance against Oklahoma Christian in 2011.
The Pioneers outshot the Yellow Jackets, 26-4. Besides HPU's goal, WBU goal keeper
John-Ramses Thomas faced only one other Yellow Jacket shot on goal.
The Pioneers return home on Monday to face McMurry beginning at 7 p.m. at J.V. Hilliard Field. Prior to their home-opener on Saturday against Hardin-Simmons, the War Hawks are 1-1 on the season, having defeated Jarvis Christian, 4-1, in their season-opener before falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor, 2-0.
