Box Score ATCHISON, Kan. – After taking a tough, 1-0 loss against Baker University on Friday, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team finished its road trip with a match against No. 24 Benedictine in Atchison, Kan.
The Pioneers (0-5-1) held the Ravens to just one goal in the first half, but Benedictine's three quick goals in the second half proved to be too much for the Pioneers, as Benedictine handed WBU 4-0 loss.
Wayland put up a solid defensive performance in the first half, but in the 33
rd minute Bethany Smith got the ball to Jordan Francescon who took the shot and found the net, giving the Ravens a 1-0 lead.
Benedictine (6-0) went into the locker room with a one goal lead, but was obviously not satisfied. The Ravens came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in a five minute window.
In the 46
th minute, Bethany Smith scored the first of two goals off a corner kick from Liz Enna. Smith headed in Enna's pass to give Benedictine a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Smith took a free kick after a foul was called on Wayland just outside the box. Smith took a perfect shot, sending the ball in the top-right corner of the goal to give the Ravens a 3-0 lead.
The scoring barrage wasn't over, however, as Francescon scored her second goal of the match just one minute after Smith recorded her second goal.
Francescon received a pass from Maggie Hair then had a one-on-one with Wayland's keeper,
Bailey Stengler. Francescon beat Stengler to give Benedictine a 4-0 lead.
Jodian Morris provided the best opportunity for the Pioneers when she took the ball down the sideline at the 77
th minute, eventually beating a defender and taking a hard shot outside the box. It was a beautiful move, but Ashley Holland, the Raven's goalie, made a nice save to preserve the shutout.
Morris took all three of Wayland's shots Sunday.
The Pioneers have their final tune up game Thursday when they host West Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m. at J.V. Hilliard Field. After their match with the Lady Buffs, Wayland will take on Oklahoma City on Sept. 27 in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
