Box Score The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team hosted No. 17 University of the Science and Arts of Oklahoma Tuesday night at J.V. Hilliard Field looking for its first Sooner Athletic Conference win. The Pioneers were unable to pull off an upset, however, falling to the Drovers, 2-0.
The Drovers (8-1, 1-0) looked sharp in their first SAC game of the season, scoring a goal in each half against WBU. Kyle Maxwell provided both goals for USAO.
Maxwell's first goal came off a perfectly executed corner kick. Liam Madden took the kick for the Drovers, placing the ball right in front of the net for Maxwell to head in 23 minutes into the match.
Wayland (6-4, 0-2) was able to shutout USAO for the remainder of the half, but the Pioneers only got off two shots in the first period and none in the second.
In the second half, Maxwell scored his second goal of the match 13½ minutes remaining. The Pioneers were trying to clear the ball, but Maxwell came up with it, beat a defender and made a tough shot in the bottom, left-hand corner of the goal.
The Drovers held onto their lead, taking the match, 2-0.
The Pioneers travel to Oklahoma City Saturday for their next match where they will take on Mid-America Christian (5-4, 1-0) at 4 p.m.
